COMPANY HISTORY

Founded by Ernesto S. de Castro, Ph.D. in 1982, ESCA offers structural design, civil engineering, and project and construction management services.

In over thirty years of operation, we have cultivated and applied our expertise in commercial, industrial, institutional and residential projects of varying scale and complexity, both local and international. Our portfolio includes several of the country's most recognizable landmarks, which were undertaken with our clientele consisting of various prominent businesses here and abroad.

Our Milestones

ESCA was established. Back then, ESCA was providing Structural Engineering services only. SM was already one of its major clients. ESCA also provided services to many architects who worked for residential structures, among them architects Lor Calma and Rafael S. Urbano.

ESCA was commissioned by the Department of Public Works and Highways to do the conceptual and preliminary engineering of the Butuan Bypass Road Bridge. The stay-bridge concept of Dr. Ernesto de Castro, the first stay-bridge in the Philippines, was adopted by the DPWH and the international financial institution.

To undertake bigger and major projects, Dr. de Castro joined Trans-Asia Philippines as executive vice president and after a few months, was made president of the company.  After a year, Dr. de Castro was promoted to country manager of the Trans Asia Group. The company is a 400-engineer strong engineering consulting firm doing work in the United States, Hong Kong, and other parts of Asia, Middle East, and Europe.

Dr. de Castro was appointed undersecretary of the Office of the President of the Philippines where he oversaw foreign assisted projects.

Dr. de Castro returned full time to ESCA. In a continued search for growth, ESCA started providing project and construction management services. ESCA was hired by Continental Cement as project manager for its expansion program.

ESCA started engaging in government projects including the United States Agency for International Development (USAID) rehabilitation projects. These included schools such as Maguinao Cruz-na-Daan Science Building in San Rafael Bulacan; Peñaranda Science Building and Bongabon Science High School Building, which are both in Nueva Ecija; and public markets such as Apalit Public Market and Balanga Public Market.

True to his passion for education, Dr. de Castro served as dean of the University of the East College of Engineering, both for Manila and Caloocan campuses from June 2003 to July 2005. He became the Chancellor of the Caloocan campus from July 2005 to April 2006.

In June, ESCA moved to its present office at 78th 8th Avenue, Murphy, Cubao, Quezon City.

ESCA conducted a structural investigation and rehabilitation of earthquake-damaged buildings such as the 12-story Philippine Veterans Bank Building and adjacent structures located on Bonifacio Drive, Port Area, Manila.

Dr. ESCA moved its office to Katipunan Avenue beside Quirino Memorial Medical Center (Labor Hospital).  Castro was appointed chairman of the Board of Examiners for Civil Engineers of the Professional Regulation Commission.

ESCA moved its office again, this time at one of its projects—148 ATC Centre, Katipunan Ave. St. Ignatius Village, Quezon City, which is owned by A. Tung Chinco, the exclusive distributor of Ligo Sardines.

Civil Works Department was established, adding to ESCA’s array of services. When the number of local projects declined because of the Asian Financial Crisis, ESCA sought opportunities overseas and began outsourcing its engineering services.

ESCA International Inc. was incorporated on 2 July. It focuses on engineering outsourced services.

ESCA Knowledge Academy was established to provide BIM training to clients and industry players.

2018 was a big year for ESCA. The firm became ISO 9001-2015 QMS Accredited and gained new BIM clients. Ortigas and Company Limited Partnership (OCLP) joined ESCA’s major client list for BIM. The company also provided BIM services for the first IKEA store in the Philippines. ESCA was also part of the team who won the New Senate Building (Bagong Senado) global design competition.

DPWH Awarded the structural assessment works for the Big One Package III and IV to ESCA.

ESCA started the Building Information Modeling Services for some of the stations and depot of North-South Commuter Railways (NSCR) Project.

Due to COVID, ESCA cope with the new normal and started the hybrid set-up. The firm is also working on Civil 3-D services for Changi Airport’s Runway.

ESCA renewed its ISO certification, which is now valid until May 2024. The company is now providing BIM services for Cabading 5 MLV Reservoir and 80MLD Booster Station. In celebration of its 40th anniversary, ESCA also rebranded—refreshing its logo and collaterals.
